On Monday, March 5th, 2018, Don and Cathy Larkin proudly presented a cheque in the amount of $20,000 to ensure 5-8 students will be able to attend RYLA for the next 10-15 years. Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a life-changing experience for those high school students in attendance. Over three days, participants develop leadership skills and make lasting connections. This positive program is managed by our New Generations Committee, and we’re so thankful for this extremely generous donation.
Also on the agenda was the presentation of the Rajbir (Roger) Mann International Service Award, recognizing Dr. Godfrey Bacheyie “who demonstrates energetic and enthusiastic service internationally”. This is a newly created award by Rotary Club of LaSalle Centennial, honouring their past member Roger Mann who was involved with over twenty-three water and sanitation projects in India, Africa, and Mexico.
This award nicely tied in the program of the day which focused on projects of the World Community Service Committee. Our Club has done critical work around the globe. Projects that were touched upon included the Guatemala Literacy Project, our part in the Canadian World Education Foundation (India and Kenya Chapters), Theresa Shuurman’s National Immunization Days Polio Program in India & Pakistan and The Windsor (1918) Legacy Learning Centre in Boma Ngombe – Tanzania. Many projects took place in Singida, Tanzania including The Canadian Tanzanian Centre of Excellence for Vulnerable Children and Women, Community Food Bank, The Primary School Textbook Project, fun day for kids with HIV/Aids and Medical Support for members of the Albino Community. Ghana, Jirapa projects were touched upon, including the greenhouse project, clean water wells and a collaborative project with our Club, Roseland and Walkerville Rotary Clubs providing uniforms.
