Marcela Diaz had a unique way of delivering the 4-way test: She asked everyone to close their eyes when reciting, to see if everyone knew them by heart. The result? Some flubs, but on the whole, it looks like most everyone has them down pat!
We were honoured to have Dr. Mary Jean Gallagher as our guest speaker at the last meeting. Her talk focused on 3 areas: Education in Ontario, Canada and Internationally. As the former Chief Student Achievement Officer and Assistant Deputy Minister of Student Achievement for Ontario, she has incredible insight into education in Ontario and Canada, and as an active Rotarian, member and former president of Rotary Club of Roseland since 1991, she has used her skills to help bring education and literacy to areas in need internationally. “Education is a golden ticket – it’s a ticket to not only be able to read, but a way to access the world around us.”
The meeting began with those present sharing a bit of information about themselves and how they are related to Rotary. Information was provided on the relationship between the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) and the Satellite Club. After announcements and fun fines, Dr. Rick Caron presented a power point talk on the Polio Plus/End Polio Now initiative first adopted by Rotary International in 1979. Upon declaration of a Polio free world, Rotary will end its commitment. There are still 3 countries not considered polio free.
Keynote Speaker in Detroit (Wayne State University, Student Center Ballroom) from 8:30am-5:00pm on Friday, October 25th:
12:15 – 1:15pm: Samantha Fuentes, Parkland Florida High School shooting survivor. Fuentes will deliver a keynote address on “Outcomes from Parkland” which details her personal story in the Parkland massacre, how it led her to activism, and what she, March for our Lives, and others are doing to raise awareness and lessen such horrific events now and in the future.
Featured Keynote Speakers in Windsor (University of Windsor, Law building - 401 Sunset Ave.) from 8:30am-5:00pm on Saturday, October 26th:
12:30 – 1:15pm: Indrani Pal-Chaudhuri, filmmaker, photographer and activist, is a “leading director and voice for female empowerment” (Tribeca Film Festival). Her work has won over 25 awards including The Tribeca Film Festival 2019 Disruptor Award, Best Picture and Best Director at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival, two Gold Lions at Cannes Festival of Creativity, and Best Film at the CNN 2018 Expose Awards (https://www.indrani.com/bio). Indrani is also a fashion photographer whose photographs have been featured in top publications including The New York Times, Vogue, VanityFair, Rolling Stone, Harper’s Bazaar and more. She’ll exhibit her many film and video projects that tackle the devaluation and marginalization of women throughout the world.
2:45-3:45pm: Dr. Sakeena Yacoobi, Founder and CEO of Afghan Learning Centre, has helped make health services and education accessible for women and children. “For more than twenty years, Dr. Sakena Yacoobi has risked her life to teach women and children in Afghanistan. In the face of a brutally oppressive Taliban regime, she secretly used education to reclaim Islam” (https://tanenbaum.org/peacemakers-in-action-network/meet-the-peacemakers/sakena-yacoobi/). Dr. Yacoobi holds many awards, including the Sunhak Peace Prize (2017), the Harold W. McGraw Prize in Education (2016) and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. While vacationing in Tanzania, Maureen Lucas, a long-time education sponsor and supporter of the Tanzania Initiative, spent October 24th, 2019 visiting Lydia and the other girls attending Sangiti Secondary School, checking out the Learning and Resource Centre legacy project, and visiting Joyce's family in Boma Ng'ombe. Timothy Massawe was a wonderful host and chauffeur and even went so far as to accommodate Geoff's love of flying and planes. The smiles and joy on the faces of all in these photos speaks volumes. Making these connections makes all of our efforts worthwhile. In Maureen's words - "I can't believe I'm here. Everything is so amazingly different. Sensory overload. Best day ever. My heart is full."
Again this year, District 6400 - Canadian Clubs will come together and have an evening of fun and fellowship as we make a "Donation Mountain". Yes, the tradition of the RotarySocks and Bottoms project continues.
Socks, underwear, diapers, adult incontinence products, sleeping bags hats, mitts, and scarves will be collected by Rotary Clubs, to be distributed to various agencies to help the homeless and those in need. This year we have added toilet paper to the items being collected.
Rotarians and their families will be invited to attend the Socks and Bottoms dinner on December 11th to build a "Donation Mountain". Please save the date.
Please bring your donations to this Monday's meeting or to the Rotary office. Thanks for your help!
