Last Monday, our Club honoured its past presidents with what we hope will become an annual tradition. It was amazing and heartwarming to see so many of those who have lead Rotary Club of Windsor (1918), now known as the club that has “given millions to those in need”, all come together in one room. The question posed to each president was “how do you remember your year?”, and we heard countless unbelievable accomplishments this club has made throughout its history. From Past President Lex McCrindle (1981-82) to Past President Lou Valente (2016-17) and many in between, our club has helped support initiatives such as eradicating polio (referred to by Past President Don Marsh), establishing a community donations program (Past President Janet Kelly), supporting the John McGivney Centre and Maryvale (referred to by Past Presidents Romeo Girardi and Maureen Lucas), building the Safety Village (as described by Past President Stephen Payne), helping Haiti with earthquake disaster relief (mentioned by Past President Bill McArthur), raising money for the Willistead Manor through Art in the Park (as stated by Past Presidents Shari Cunningham and Gary Wintermute), and so many other amazing projects. Mottos to live by were given by some, including “Be a Gift to the World” by Past President Mike Drake, “Money isn’t to be accumulated, it’s to be spent and raised again” by Past President Charlie Clark and “Make Every Day Your Masterpiece” by Peter Hrastovec. Past President Lex McCrindle, warmly referred to as the “Dean of Past Presidents”, gave an inspirational speech reflecting on our club’s past, the state of our club’s present as well as hopes for the future. The Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) Centennial Plaza:
"On February 1st a major step took place for our Centennial Plaza project which is our major Legacy initiative. With the signing of an official agreement between City of Windsor officials and President Colleen on behalf of the Club and myself on behalf of the Foundation Fund, our project is now officially launched. With a reasonable break in the weather we will achieve major completion status by May of this year - in time for our opening day celebrations. The first of two capital cost payments from the Foundation will be deposited with the City this week. I wish to acknowledge the work of Legacy Chair Janet and Centennial Chair Maureen and a cooperative and complimentary City Administrative team. I also wish to thank the Club members, Major Sponsors, as well as those who contributed with the purchase of benches and in other ways. It is this generosity that continues to make this a year to remember".
- Don Marsh , Chair Foundation Fund.
Our Annual Youth Exchange Auction is a fun event where Rotarians will bring in items for Auction and then bid on these items. All money raised is earmarked for a special account that the Youth Exchange Committee uses for our Exchange Students and Host Families. Some examples are Christmas gifts for the Host Families, welcome gifts for our students, student bus passes, events planned to bring Exchange students and potential host families together, etc. Our goal is to ensure the continuity of this very important Rotary initiative!
We ask all Rotarians to consider donating a gift, and absolutely bringing money to bid on a special gift for Valentine’s Day!
Rotary Clubs of Essex County Blood Drive Challenge starts in February, and February 10th is Rotary Day. Contact Dennis Segatto for details.
