In commemoration of our Club's Centennial, our Club chose three major past local projects we've helped over the years and planted trees.

The Safety Village was first, and despite the cold morning weather, many Rotarians gathered to take part in this momentous event. Next, we headed to John McGivney Children's Centre and were honoured when some of the students helped us with the tree ceremony. We finished our road trip at Maryvale Adolescent and Family Services where we held our final legacy tree dedication and had an amazing lunch.

Thank you to everyone involved in making these events so special.

Everyone in attendance at our Pigout for Polio event, run this year by new chair Susan Falodun and her committee, had a great time! Held at Fogolar Furlan Club of Windsor, all guests, including District Governor Paul Sincock and Past District Governor Bob Gallagher (thanks for attending!) enjoyed an evening of fun, great food and fellowship. Thanks to Elder Theresa Sims (traditional Indigenous Knowledge Keeper) as she thanked creation by singing and playing the traditional drum, to Major Paul Rideout for his invocation, to President Elect Gord Faas for heading the toast and to past Pigout chair Nick Bibic for leading us in the recitation of the 4 Way test. The new “Auction Lottery” format was a huge hit, with Greg DeHetre and Peter Hrastovec enticing everyone to participate.

The audience was captivated as Past District Governor Dr. Rick Caron took us through an engaging account of the history of polio, why Rotary has made it it’s mission to eradicate the terrible disease and how far we’ve come. From an estimated 350,000 cases in 125 counties in 1988 to 20 cases in 3 countries today, we’ve come a long way - but we still have a ways to go. Dr. Caron used the analogy of an apple tree - the apples on the bottom are easy to get to, but the few that are located near the top are the challenge. We’re “This Close” to eradicating polio from the world, and because of Rotary’s persistence, and events like ours, we’ll get there soon. 💜

50/50 Raffle at Pigout for Polio: $340, won by Nancy Leavoy. Congratulations, Nancy!

The Free Day at the Museum was a huge hit, according to museum personnel. Over 350 people from our community took advantage of our Club's sponsored day, which included crafts, a Rotary-themed scavenger hunt (a favourite!) and tours of the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) exhibit. Thanks to everyone who came out and to all the volunteers (Janet Kelly, Nurlan Turdaliev, Mohamed Moussa, Ed Boycott, Ryan Mancini, Sevda Barin, Maureen Lucas and Colleen Mitchell). Special thanks to the history committee members Anil Chitte and Peter Hrastovec for putting this event together, and to Bev Cyr for the idea!

The following thank-you was sent to Janet Kelly, who wanted to share:

Dear Janet and the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918),

On behalf of GLP National Co-Coordinator Carolyn Johnson, thank you very much for the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918)'s generous contribution to the Guatemala Literacy Project. Your generosity will make possible a better education and a brighter future for many schoolchildren in impoverished Guatemalan communities. Because these programs are self-sustaining, your gift will keep on giving year after year as new students are helped each and every year in perpetuity. And pending approval by The Rotary Foundation, your club’s contribution will be multiplied up to 6.5 times by the Foundation on Global Grant #1872362!

The next GLP Project Tour to Guatemala is February 2-10, 2019. I hope you and some of your fellow club members will be able to join us! Let me know if you need more information or click here to learn more.

After the project inaugurations in February 2019, your club will receive a full report, including thank you letters from some of the students that you have helped.  We look forward to keeping you and your club informed. Thanks again for all your support!

Sincerely,

Jessica
