Program from Monday, September 23rd, 2019

David Eady introduced Kitty Pope, CEO of the Windsor Public Library. Ms. Pope was excited to share three new developments with regards to the WPL:

- First, the library’s new John Muir branch is holding a grand opening celebration this Saturday Sept. 28. Festivities will begin at 1 p.m. at the library - 363 Mill St., which has been constructed in a repurposed 1921 fire hall and an 1850s horse stable.

- Second, the Budimir library branch in South Windsor is expanding by adding 6,000 square feet, almost doubling the current floor space. This addition is expected to be completed by February or March.

- Third, the Central Library will be moving to it’s temporary location, the annex of the Paul Martin Building. They’ll be going from 100,000 sq ft to 22,000, so plan on splitting up some of the collections and moving into various locations throughout the city, until they have a permanent new downtown library in place. This could take anywhere from 5-7 years.

Children's Fest held its 25th Anniversary event last weekend! With continuous live entertainment, 70 family-friendly vendors and community agencies, a wellness zone, bouncy castles, sports activities, pony rides, dog shows and many different mascots walking around each day, it was fun for the whole family at this year's event.

The Artisan, Action and Adventure Zone featured model train exhibits, Canadian Historical Aircraft Museum displays and the opportunity to learn more about robotics.

New this year, Central Park Athletics offered demonstrations of their new Clip'n Climb Rock Climbing Area! Winstar Gymnastics, The Windsor Express and the Rose City Riot Parasport Wheelchair Basketball team hosted demos as well.

It takes great people to run an event like Children's Fest! Thanks to our BANA partners, all the volunteers, planners, exhibitors and attendees - Children's Fest 2019 was a great success.

The Rotary Legacy Forest project is featured in the October 2019 issue of Rotary Canada magazine! The October issue of the Rotary Canada magazine features a 2-page story of the Rotary Legacy Forest project in which the 12 Rotary Clubs in Windsor-Essex partnered with Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) to help plant trees. Well done, area Rotary Clubs!

Message from Suzanne Grouette:

Hi everyone -

On behalf of AG Anne Chetty, I'd like to invite all of our Clubs in Area 10 (and friends of Area 10!) to a Social Meetup evening on Tuesday Oct 1 from 6-8pm at the Windsor Club. This event will give our Rotary Club members a chance to mix and socialize. But we'd also like it to be an opportunity to bring a guest who might be interested in Rotary.

One of the things we all know is that our Rotary Clubs in Area 10 provide a wide variety of meeting times, service areas of focus, and fund-raising activities. Hearing about all that we do is bound to excite and intrigue potential members. So, starting at 6:45pm, each Club President (or representative) will have 5 minutes to highlight their Club and its activities. In addition, Rick Caron, District 6400 Rotary Foundation Committee Chair, will give a 5 minute overview of the purpose and great works of the Foundation.

There will be a charge of $15 per person, to cover light appetizers. There will also be a cash bar available. Clubs are encouraged to bring brochures or information on their upcoming events.

We're looking forward to seeing everyone and their guests! If you have any questions please contact Suzanne Grouette (smgrouette@gmail.com)

In July, three members of the LaSalle club went to Malawi to do a needs assessment and to see if we could partner with clubs there with some projects. They found it was a life changing experience. Matt Maroun is a Rotarian from Dayton, OH who went to Malawi several years ago and now operates a school there. He will be doing a presentation to the LaSalle club (Essex Golf Course) on Tuesday, October 8th at 6:30. I would like to invite members of other clubs to attend to gain some knowledge of these project opportunities in Malawi.

BookFest 2019 is coming up fast! On October 19, 2019 at 8:00 pm at the School of Creative Arts, join the community for a wonderful discussion and opportunity to meet a rising Canadian author. This book is a great choice for your next Book Club!

A powerful memoir that addresses the stigma of mental illness, her novel is titled, The Woo-Woo: How I Survived Ice Hockey, Drug Raids, Demons, and My Crazy Chinese Family.
