Program from Monday, February 10th, 2020: Valentine's Day Youth Exchange Auction

Rotary Club of Windsor (1918)

Another amazing turn-out for our annual Youth Exchange auction. With Peter Hrastovec and Greg DeHetre as auctioneers, everyone had a great time biding on all different sorts of items. Our grand total collected was $1,318.00 which will be used to help our inbound exchange students continue to have an amazing experience while here in Canada!

A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who helped make this auction a success - your incredible Rotarian support is truly appreciated.

Program from Tuesday, February 11th, 2020

Rotary Satellite Club of Windsor (1918) Evening

Members welcomed Sandy Murphy from the Murchadha (Gaelic for “Murphy”) House Project. Sandy began by reminding members that children who have come through the John McGivney Centre eventually grow up and will need continuous support throughout their lives. There are currently 11,000 children and young adults on a waiting list for assisted living facilities in Windsor-Essex County.  Sandy and her husband have championed the building of a house in Cottam for 4 adults requiring assistant living. The project began as a non-profit in February, 2018 and was registered in January, 2019.  Construction on the house began in June, 2019 and the ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in December. Sandy shared photos of the building process and was certainly a testimony of what can be done by a determined and dedicated organization.

Fun night at our 2nd Annual Tell Your Story event, put on by our Club's Literacy Committee in partnership with Douglas Marketing Group and Families First. Contest winners were honoured and their stories were read on February 18th at Signature Tributes Event Centre.

Thank you to everyone who supported this event, and especially to the incredible young writers who shared their stories. The audience got to hear the amazing, emotional (some heartwarming, some heart-wrenching) stories of the 3 finalists from each category come to life through dramatic readings by our members Kay Douglas, Peter Hrastovec, Greg DeHetre, Kevin Blondin and Rebecca Rivard. A surprise announcement: With the permission of the students and their parents, these stories will live on through the publication of a book, making each contributor a “published author”!

Young Rotary Leaders (both from our Club and from Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland) got together for some fun, food and fellowship last night. We had a great time and especially loved seeing some new faces!

Sydney Thompson and Jesse Thompson, co-chairs of our YRL committee, explained that the goal is to come up with one service project per month. People were urged to put ideas into a hat and the committee will take these ideas and choose the ones that are the most impactful, both in our community and internationally. We want to see more young people getting involved, and joining the Young Rotary Leaders is a great way to have fun while helping people - Service Above Self!
