Dr. Myers and his team at the University are doing amazing philanthropic work, providing eye care to those who would otherwise go without. With the help of research and development teams at U of M, this program, part of the Common Health + Clinic initiative, brings top-of-the-line health care to underprivileged communities world-wide in the form of carefully designed, repurposed shipping containers. Specifications for the design of these containers included not only being able to fit the necessary health care equipment, but also had to consider heating and cooling, power, dehumidification, water resources, telecommunications (access to cell or wireless connection) and transportation. Dr. Myers explained that up until now, they’ve been creating these health care facilities as one-offs, but are looking to expand production to be able to fulfill the need while at the same time lowering the cost of each container. The team is hopeful that this plant can be located in Detroit.
