In keeping with this month’s theme of Peace and Conflict, members welcomed Gilbert Iyamuremye. Gilbert works with the RCEC Diocese – Refugee Ministries and assists new refugees as they adapt to life in a new country.
He explained the difference between asylum-seekers and refugees and provided interesting statistics on Canada’s place in the world regarding refugees. Most surprising was a note that there are currently 70.8 million refugees in the world. Members were encouraged to become involved in the settlement process by contributing funds, providing emotional support, but most especially in breaking down the myths about refugees.
