Jim Louttit, Chair and President of the Rotarian Action Group for Microfinance and Community Development and Vice-Chair of the Rotarian Action Group Chairs Committee, was the guest speaker in our Club's Centennial Speaker series. He spoke about the important role microfinance plays in the lives of low-income consumers. The Rotarian Action Group for Microfinance and Community Development (RAGM) has helped people and groups both locally and internationally obtain loans they would not otherwise have access to, leading to improved quality of life. Louttit gave specific examples of programs he has directly worked on, including the Honduras Economic and Community Development (HECD) Program, which has currently helped over 9,000 clients, and LaunchDetroit, a microfinance program benefitting entrepreneurs in Metro Detroit that is currently being implemented.

Dr. Godfrey Bacheyie also addressed the audience to explain that our Club has been taking part in microfinance projects for some time in Ghana. Women have been able to earn a living because of the help that has been given. Repayment rate for projects that Mr. Louttit and Dr. Bacheyie spoke of were both upwards of 98%.

Past President Shari Cunningham thanked both speakers and Mr. Louttit was presented with a Centennial Speaker Series Certificate and maple syrup made by Club member Gordon Drake. $100 will be donated to Rotary International's Foundation Fund and $100 to a charity of his choice.

Walter Willms is proud to share the following article, which appeared on Blackburn News on September 29th, regarding his son Michael:

Downtown resident combines IRONMAN training with civic action

As he trains for an IRONMAN competition in Florida this November, Mike Willms will also be raising cash for the Windsor Downtown Community Collaborative.

The collaborative works to connect residents living in downtown Windsor and improve the community through events like the Downtown Windsor Farmers’ Market. It also organizes neighbourhood cleanups and community gardens while supporting programs like the Little Things Matter program, the Community Cafe, and Sports 4 All fitness programs.

Willms has launched a pledge drive connected to his training to raise the collaborative’s profile and boost public donations.

“I personally see a lot of parallels between a triathlon and some of the challenges in our community,” he said. “Sometimes when we look at the challenges facing downtown and think what we might imagine downtown to be, it seems almost impossible.”

“With a triathlon, you take one swim stroke, one stroke on the peddle, and one foot in front of the other on the run, and you add these contributions together, and you find the finish line,” he continued. “Some of the work the WDCC is doing is a little step here and a little step there, and we add all these intentional behaviours together, and we see a community in the way we hope it will be.”

The competition in Florida is his first IRONMAN. He will swim 3.8 km, bike 180 km, and run a full marathon, 42.2 km.

Not to be missed! This family-friendly day will feature a special Rotary-themed scavenger hunt, fun crafts in the Hands-on History Room, and a guided tour of the new Rotary exhibit at 3:00PM.

Make sure to visit the Chimczuk Museum on Saturday, October 13th between 10:00AM and 5:00PM to enjoy a free admission day sponsored by our Club. While there, explore the new exhibit: A Century of Service Above Self: The Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) on display through December 2018.
