Rotary Club of Windsor (1918)

Monday, Kathleen & Allison joined us to discuss the work that the Multicultural Council of Windsor is doing to create a more inclusive and accessible Windsor-Essex county for newcomers to the area!

The organization was founded in 1973 to support newcomers’ needs, particularly in reception, integration and adult education. This non-profit charitable organization has welcomed and offered settlement assistance to hundreds of families.

More than just helping these families adjust to our cultural norms; the MCC helps to form groups that preserve and celebrate the heritage and practices of the many cultures that now call Windsor-Essex home.

The MCC helps adults with their employability skills, including what skills are needed, how to conduct an interview properly, learning English, and creating a good resume. While this resource receives little funding, they have seen the benefits of providing these services and helping the majority becoming successfully employed.

Program from Tuesday, June 16th, 2020

Tuesday, June 16th, we welcomed actress and activist Leslie McCurdy to share her passion for art and telling the story of people of colour, while promoting equality, justice and acceptance for the black community.

Members were treated to a passionate presentation by local actress and activist, Leslie McCurdy. Leslie began by sharing two of her poems and explaining why “Juneteenth” is celebrated in the black community. This was the day when slavery was officially over.

Leslie has written and performed a one-woman play on the life of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad and has spent the past 23 years performing in local schools. She is currently working on a second presentation entitled, “Things my 4 Sisters Saw”, which explores the policies and economics of slavery.

WE NEED YOU HELP - FOUNDATION FUND

The proceeds from Art in the Park provide support for many of our charities. Most importantly, our club has contributed to funding the refurbishment of Willistead Manor. Over these many years, we have raised more than 1.2 million dollars. Most recently, our efforts have contributed to the much-improved window restorations in the manor. But this year, we had to make the difficult decision to cancel AIP due to COVID-19.

We need your help! If you were going to go to Art in the Park this year or if you were an attendee in the past, please consider contributing the price of admission ($5.00/person) to the Rotary Club of Windsor Foundation Fund.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO END COVID IN TANZANIA

Help reduce the spread of COVID-19 in Kariakoo, one of the busiest market places in Tanzania. Every day, about 1.5 million people pass through this market, making physical distancing nearly impossible. By providing face masks, hand sanitizer, soap and educational resources to low-income market vendors they can continue earning to support their families, and serve their customers, as safely as possible.

Every $10 donation will provide one person with two locally made cloth masks, washing soap, sanitizer, hygiene instructions (in Kiswahili) and will contribute to educational posters to be displayed in the market area.  All donations are greatly appreciated and you will receive a tax receipt from PayPal Giving Fund Canada.
